Countersteering
There's not much to be said about countersteering over what you can find all over the web. It is the most important way to steer and control a bike.
Other ways to control the bike, that I know:
- body shifting - doesn't help much
- hanging off - does lower the center of gravity and puls the bike a bit, I think
- pushing in the inside peg - that's the second best after countersteering
How to practice countersteering? That's easy. Find an open road with no traffic and try to go between the dashed lines on the pavement - faster and faster, by pushing on the inside handle. Start at say 40 kmh and work your way up - I can do it up to 70 kmh after which I go for two at a time.
As you go faster, you will have to also pull the outside handle to pick the bike up faster.
You should practice some steering and braking combinations as well.

Always wear as much equipment as you can. Realize that accidents are more likely when you're practicing or learning maneuvers, so be sure to have full protection gear...but, at the same time, you'd rather lock up the front while practicing in an empty parking lot rather than chased by an out of control 18 wheeler on the 401...
Have fun!
